Viticella Listings
This group is great for enhancing roses and any other shrub. Some are good with conifers and most look good scrambling through the taller perennials (herbaceous). They are all summer and autumn flowering.
Viticellas are extremely cold hardy and more wind tolerant than the large flowering - they are also resistant to stem-wilt!
Viticellas tend to be single stemmed and spindly growing in the first year or two. Thereafter, they will grow very strong (when planted right). In general, it takes a Clematis three years to establish (year 1 = sleep year, year 2 = creep year, year 3 = leap year).
This group all need hard pruning in late winter (xC).

Flowers deep purple, anthers cream. One of the most free-flowering hybrids, so abundantly prod. It’s almost obscuring the foliage. (xC) Summer-autumn. Tepals x6, making a nice rounded appearance; 10cm. If you have more than 3 Clematis in your garden, this one should be one of them. |

This is the rare double seed setting viticella, making it possible to breed new double viticellas from it.
Strong grower with flowers 8cm across, packed w. tepals, but still with a centre of anthers and stigmas. The colour is soft "old rose" purple, very close to the colour of mother PPE. We do have 3 diff. under this name. |

This seems to be the correct name for Mary Rose (Fretwell) and is what Evison call 'Purpurea Plena'. This plant has got many more synonyms! (= C. peregrina purpurea flore pleno, C.Bauhinius,1623) and the International Clematis registrar wants it called 'Flore Pleno'. The closest available is 'Purpurea Plena Elegans'. |
